Yet another training run that really did not go as planned. We were in Sierra Vista, visiting friends for Christmas and all I had to do was a measly 2 miles, but at a difficult 6.7 mph pace. I should have allowed myself to warm up, but I didn’t. I just tore off at the fastest speed I could tolerate, which was about 6 mph, and tried to go up from there. I struggled for about 1.7 miles, bouncing around between 6 mph and 7 mph, averaging more like 6, and then I ran into real trouble.
My belly started to cramp and I thought I might be in for some really exciting times. I tried to keep lugging along, but my speed did start dropping. I did about the next 6 tenths of a mile at about 5 or 6 mph, probably averaging around 5.5, and then that was it, the cramping was too bad to continue and I had to start walking.
I walked for about 3/4 of a mile and then I just gave up on the speed requirement and jogged about as fast as I wanted to, but nowhere near as fast as I could, for the remaining mile, going from about 5 mph slowly up to 6 mph by the time I got back to the ranch. So, although my miles were way over, my speed was way under. Hard to know whether or not to call this a successful run, it sure didn’t feel like it!
