Well, I did it! It took me about a half-hour to run an 8-minute mile, but I did do it. And, I actually did it continuously without stopping. I knew I’d have to go to a gym and do it on a treadmill, though. There was no way I’d keep up that kind of pace on the street. I began by walking, then jogging, then jogging faster, and I slowly pushed the speed up from about 5.3 to 5.5, then 5.7, then 5.9, then 6 and that’s when I really started to worry that I’d never get to 7.5. However, I had a good song on, so I went pretty quickly to 6.3, then 6.5 and then the rest is sort of a blur. I guess I must have just punched it, pretty quickly, up to 7.5 and then just tried to concentrate on staying alive and not falling off the treadmill. I ended up looking at the distance marker about every 2/10ths of a mile, but they were going by pretty quick. Point 2, Point 4, Point 6. Wow. I couldn’t believe it, I was actually gonna make it! Point 8. Hurray! However, then the next song that came on was not a real motivator and I started to lose steam very quickly. I worried I wasn’t gonna make it, but I just bore down and cranked out the rest of the lousy little one mile I had to do. Then I spent another good 10 minutes on the cool-down. I’m surprised at how the body really doesn’t want to slow down that fast, even when it was just screaming for you to slow down. In any event, I’m very pleased that I did my EIGHT MINUTE MILE!!!
