DAY ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-THREE – LONG – 8.5 MILES AT 5.3 MPH

Boy, was I lazy today!  I slept in until about noon, refusing to get out of bed until I had convinced myself that I would do my long run.  When I finally rousted myself, I groggily got dressed for my run, thought about my route, then started feeling guilty about skipping my speed run yesterday.  I decided to try to kill two birds with one stone.

I decided I’d run 2.5 miles to the gym, run 3.5 miles on a treadmill at the gym, then run 2.5 miles home to give myself the 8.5 miles distance I’d need for this run.  However, I also decided I’d try to get my speed up to 7.5 mph and do my speedy half-mile from yesterday while I was at it, too.

The light-hearted jog to the gym was no problem and warming up on the treadmill was also no problem.  I got going faster and faster and faster, but could not really approach 7.5 mph.  Eventually, I realized I was running out of distance to do a half-mile at speed, so I just bumped up the speed and gave it a try.  I held it for a whole tenth of a mile and then that was it, back down in speed.  I gave it one more go and got about another five-hundredths of a mile and again, that was it.  I gave up on the idea and just finished out my 3.5 miles, then headed home.

It’s funny how 8.5 miles, especially split into 3-4 mile segments, just really isn’t anything anymore.
